• Mortar joints are receding more than 1/4" from the stone face
• Crumbling or powdery mortar that comes away easily
• Water staining or damp patches on interior walls
• Visible cracks in mortar joints running horizontally or vertically
• Frost damage or spalling on brick or stone faces
